Why is it called Black Friday?

Black Friday comes on the fourth Friday of November, right after the U.S. Thanksgiving Day and is almost traditionally great for shopping. So much, that retailers are constantly trying to outdo each other with earlier opening hours – some opening at midnight after Thanksgiving – and of course with the highest discounts and lowest prices.

Many retailers begin their sales earlier, even on Thanksgiving night to get ahead of the competition. Online shops often stretch it out during the whole week and call it Black Friday Week or just Black Week.

Where does the name Black Friday come from?

There are a few stories about the real origin of the name. “Black Friday” or just “Black” has been applied to days upon which calamities occurred. “Black Monday” for instance in relation to the Wall Street stock exchange crash in 1929, also known as the “Great Crash”.

The earliest known use of “Black Friday” to refer to the day after Thanksgiving occurred in an engineering magazine in 1951. Here it referred to the practice of workers calling in sick on the day after Thanksgiving, in order to have a four-day weekend – and presumably be able to do their shopping?!

The New York Times on November 29, 1975, in which it still refers specifically to “the busiest shopping and traffic day of the year” in Philadelphia. However, use of the phrase spread slowly.

Black Friday nowadays

It wasn’t earlier than around 2000 – 2010 that the English term “Black Friday” gained attention around the globe. Mainly the internet helped to spread the word since major ecommerce shops and the gaming industry started using the term for their sales actions. It didn’t take long until local stores in many countries started using the term “Black Friday” to promote their special sales.

Latest since people make videos with their cell phones and share them online, Black Friday is known also for long queues at the local electronics shop to catch best deals for electronics or home goods. Videos about crowds storming into shops or actually fighting hard verbally and physical for the last item available went epic on the internet.
